Budding Scientists Attend Conference

Over 100 students from central Minnesota schools spent the day immersed in science at Sourcewell's Young Scientists Conference, Oct. 4, 2023, at Central Lakes College – Staples campus.

Students in grades 4-6 were invited to discover and experience a multitude of scientific disciplines at this event, which returned for a second year. More than a half-dozen science and technology professionals from around Minnesota presented information about their careers and areas of expertise.

Sourcewell’s student academic programs coordinator, Crysta Christensen, said that this event was brought back due to tremendous positive feedback from last year’s event. This year’s conference aimed to harness that excitement and show students the vast possibilities available in scientific studies.

“We wanted this conference to bring science to life for students,” Christensen said. “There are so many possibilities available here — for career paths, for general knowledge, for personal growth — and we set out to give exciting, real-world examples of that. We’re so excited to get to bring this event back, and overjoyed to see students’ reactions as they discover new passions in the most unlikely of places.”

Our programs allow people to interact with real reptiles from our backyards or around the world. Students are welcome to touch (and even hold) the ambassador animals for a truly hands-on experience.

Judy Barka is the assistant director of AgCentric, the Northern Center of Agricultural Excellence. She has been with AgCentric for 8 years and really enjoys connecting all ages with the exciting world of agriculture. Judy is energized by helping students discover their potential in the agriculture, food, and natural resources industries.

Let's explore the fascinating world of rocks and minerals! We'll discover how they form and make up our amazing planet, and how to look closer to tell them apart. Get ready for an exciting hands-on experience with rock specimens and take one home with you to remember this incredible adventure!

Mike DeLuca has worked in mining, mineralogy, and education. He has a master’s degree in earth science mineralogy and he teaches geology around the country. He has worked with the Bureau of Land Management and the Arizona Mining and Mineral Museum.

Bell Museum | Wildlife Dioramas

Learn about the Bell Museum's world-famous wildlife dioramas as windows to ecosystem education and preservation. Get a chance to create your own aquatic-themed mini diorama to take home!

Jennifer is a nature enthusiast and a passionate engineer who grew up exploring the woods of northern Minnesota. When she’s not teaching, you can find her in her pollinator gardens, pumpkin patch, or nurturing her large collection of unusual houseplants. Megan is excited to expand the Bell Museum’s programming statewide through virtual programming, camps, and outreach events. Outside of work, she loves to be outside enjoying nature with her family or cozying up with a new craft.

Mr. Strachan has earned two degrees in aerospace engineering, and has worked in the military, government, education, and commercial worlds. His experience includes the Global Positioning System (GPS), the CIA, and the NASA Space Shuttle Program. He is also a substitute teacher in math and science at Brainerd and Pequot Lakes schools.

Sourcewell | Machines Through the Ages

From the invention of the wheel to today’s self-driving cars, technology has changed so much that it’s hard to even think about. In this session, you’ll get a chance to learn firsthand about machines across the centuries, using VR headsets and 3D modeling. Learn how technology progresses, and how machines can have an impact on our environment.

Aaron is a technology and education consultant at Sourcewell, where he helps teachers and educators bring science, technology, and engineering lessons to students across central Minnesota.
