Recognizing Students of Character
High school students receive recognition
The show must go on.
Combining creativity and technology, Sourcewell honored 43 students from 22 central Minnesota high schools at a virtual recognition banquet - Wednesday, April 15, 2020.
The Students of Character Celebration is held each year to recognize students who are quiet, behind-the-scenes leaders and may otherwise be overlooked for scholarships. However, due to stay-in-place regulations set by the State, Sourcewell had to find an alternative way to hold the event.
“We know how much our teachers, the students to be recognized, their families, and even our community look forward to this event each year,” said Sourcewell Executive Director and CEO Dr. Chad Coauette. “There was no way we could flat-out cancel this important celebration. And, thanks to a few creative minds in our marketing and multimedia department, we were able to find a way we could all still come together while being apart.”
Recorded earlier and at separate times, the multimedia team was able to piece together all parts of the event and air them on Facebook Live for the public to enjoy.
A Bright Future
Each student was awarded a scholarship thanks to the generosity of Central Lakes College, Minnesota State Community and Technical College, area businesses, and individuals. All students had a chance to win door prizes, also provided via donations.
Honored students are from school districts within Sourcewell's service area, including Cass, Crow Wing, Morrison, Todd, and Wadena counties.

The annual Students of Character Celebration recognizes students for their quiet leadership. Each was selected by his or her school staff with the criteria they are “unsung heroes” of their district - behind-the-scenes students who receive little, if any, recognition. Honored students are from school districts within Sourcewell's service area, including Cass, Crow Wing, Morrison, Todd, and Wadena counties. In the past, the event was known as the Student Recognition Banquet. Sourcewell changed the name in 2019 to better reflect the nature of the celebration.
