This year, 277 local students in grades 4-6 participated in the final Math Masters competitions of the 2023-24 school year in March and April at Sourcewell.

 

They’ve run the numbers, and the results are in: These students are masters of math.

Students in fourth through sixth grades – representing schools from throughout central Minnesota, including Cass, Crow Wing, Morrison, Todd, and Wadena counties – participated in the final Math Masters competitions of the 2023-24 school year on March 7 and April 25 at Sourcewell, with many local students taking home top honors.

The Math Masters mathematics competition program challenges fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students to use critical thinking and problem-solving skills in mathematics. Students compete as individuals and on teams in eight rounds of competition. Students’ academic effort and achievement are recognized in each competition element: Fact Drill, individual round, and team competition.

Sourcewell Student Academics Coordinator Phillip Olsen said the students participating in both local events rose to the challenge, showing up in bigger numbers than ever and displaying a clear drive to compete.

“This year’s Math Masters competitions were well attended with some incredibly high scores and fierce competition,” Olsen said. “The students bring such a high level of energy to the day, and they love to celebrate. We had record numbers in both the 4th and 5th grade events, which were held simultaneously and brought in nearly 250 students. I look forward to seeing this program grow even more in the future!”
