Local students turn out for math-based competition

194 local students in grades 4-6 from schools throughout central Minnesota attended Math Masters competitions for the 2024-25 school year in March and April, hosted at Sourcewell.

Can math be fun? 194 (100 + 90 + 4) (97 x 2) (776 ÷ 4) local students say “Yes.”

Students in fourth through sixth grades – representing schools from throughout central Minnesota, including Cass, Crow Wing, Morrison, Todd, and Wadena counties – participated in the final Math Masters competitions of the 2024-25 school year on March 6, April 22, and April 25 at Sourcewell, with many local students taking home top honors.

The Math Masters mathematics competition program challenges fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students to use critical thinking and problem-solving skills in mathematics. Students compete as individuals and on teams in eight rounds of competition. Students’ academic effort and achievement are recognized in each competition element: Fact Drill, individual round, and team competition.

Sourcewell Student Academics Coordinator Crysta Blake said competitors brought their competitive nature and positive outlook to each challenge.

“Watching the students hammer through all those math questions was pure delight!” Blake said. “Their smiles and high energy were contagious, making each event not only an impressive display of math skills, but also incredibly fun. It was truly a joy to see such enthusiasm and determination in action. Hosting this event at Sourcewell was a fantastic experience: It was so great to see students in the building each day.”
